Home of Thames Citizens' Band

WELCOME to the Official and historical website of The Thames Citizens’ Band. Graciously hosted, researched and created by Greenslade Creative.

The Thames Citizens’ Band (Inc.) is “Thames’ Oldest Living Music Organisation.” Our band is the only band that has kept going since it started in “The Thames” in 1869. We started only two years after the town officially began at the proclamation of the Thames Goldfield in 1867.

The Thames Citizens’ Band (tcb) is, as stated in our constitution, here to “…foster and encourage band music and the learning of [band music], for the enjoyment of [our] members and the general public in and around the area of the Coromandel Peninsula...” We are a certified charitable organization under the Charities Act 2008.

We are a “Concert Band” which means we perform with mainly brass, woodwind and percussion instruments as well as certain amplified instruments when required. The band is made up of its paid Members as well as Associate Members and Life Members. A committee and executive officers, elected annually, deal with the business and general running of the band and its performances. For more on the current band see About pages

“I helped to dig the foundations of the current Thames Citizens’ Band Hall, I think I was about 13 at the time... I remember marching with the Band from the Old Post Office to the newly built Band Hall in 1955...”
Don Holden (Life Member).

“...playing for the ANZAC Day marches with Thames Citizens’ Band has always been a highlight for me. Knowing the meaning of the occasion for my forefathers makes me very proud to be there leading the parade to remember what it was all about ...”
Brian Greenslade (former TCB Co-ordinator).
